I’m not really into sports. The only times I ever care are when my country or school is involved, when there’s a cute guy/s playing, and when there’s some big issue/scandal looming over the game.
I was really active as a kid, and then asthma threw a monkey wrench into all, er, none (I didn’t have any) of my varsity dreams. Still, if asthma hadn’t happened and lodged me into the cozy arms of the couch, I might have been more into physically exerting myself and working up a sweat (this just made me laugh :D).
Sometimes I wonder whether I should take up a sport. It wouldn’t hurt, right? It would benefit me in so many ways, but until I find a strong enough motivation (apparently good health, discipline, socialization, etc. aren’t enough) to finally take the leap, I need to find other ways to get my blood circulating so I can claim a non-sedentary lifestyle.
I’m actually already doing physical activities that give me some kind of exercise. I just need to be more intentional about them, so I can do them enough to make a noticeable difference in my fitness. Here are some of them:
Walking – This has always been my thing. I can’t hack running or jogging, but I can walk endlessly, especially if I’m gabbing with somebody. That’s a double workout. I like to laugh, and when I’m chatting, I’m probably letting out huge belly laughs. I believe I can equate those to crunches.
Gardening – At my age (I’m GenX), I have a lot of pains, and I’m overcautious when it comes to straining my body, but gardening is a personal passion, so I forget all about my paranoid caution about hurting myself when I’m hauling sacks of potting mix, crouching, digging, etc.
Chasing after my kids – There are three of them, so I can’t help but move around; they go off in different directions. I could yell for them to come to me, but a) it doesn’t always work with kids on the spectrum, and b) I cringe at the sound of my voice yelling.
Picking up after my kids – I am training them to tidy up after themselves, but it’s a long process. In the meantime, I get to do a lot of the picking-up myself. It’s practically like playing pingpong because all I ever do is pick up the ball since my racket seemingly has a repello curse that prevents it from making contact with the ball.
