This was the first thing to come to mind. I waste a lot of time on various social media crying over animal rescues in all the tenses – animals that have been rescued, that are currently being rescued, or that still need rescuing. I always wish that I could be helping out and then heaping lots of love and comfort to those poor creatures.
There would be two parts to this short-lived animal rescue career. The first part is the usual job of helping animals in distress. The second part is avenging them. I don’t know about you, but every time I learn about the abuse or neglect that an animal has had to suffer through, I get this ardent desire to hunt down the perpetrator and make them pay.
Of course, many times it’s a simple case of cats and dogs being stray or feral. No avenging would be necessary; just teaching them to trust good people and then lavishing them with lots of care and pampering to make up for the hard life they’d had thus far.
But you know the first thing I’d be doing as warm-up for the day? I’d be going to the kill shelters and saving all those scheduled to be euthanized, especially the ones that are perfectly healthy and have simply not had the blessing of being chosen for fostering or adoption.
I know there’s a bit of fantasy in the job I’m describing, but I can’t help but include some wishful thinking. I’m aware that it’s hard to actively save and advocate for animals. I realize there’s a lot of heartbreak in it. Sometimes, things simply don’t arrive at the desired happy ending no matter how much rescuers work and pull for it.
