My husband and I are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary (and our 28th year together) today. He presented me this morning with a lovely bouquet of two of my favorite flowers: lilies and daisies.
While I love them, I immediately took them out to the porch and did the business of putting them in a vase there. That’s also where they’re going to stay for the remainder of their decorative life. It should be safe enough.
Our cats are strictly indoor cats. Not that they won’t curiously try to venture out when given the chance, but they know they’re not allowed out and don’t defy us when we tell them to get back inside. This happens rarely anyway.
The point is that the stargazers can’t get to them. The gerbera daisies are fine, but the lilies are incredibly toxic to cats, potentially causing fatal kidney failure.
Take note, however, that not all daisies are safe for cats, which is unfortunate. My daughter, who is totally crazy about cats, is named Marguerite. Incidentally, marguerite daisies are harmful to cats, a fact that she finds disgruntling. Maybe I should have named her after a different flower.
Her name choice is actually mostly based on a character in The Scarlet Pimpernel (also toxic to cats), one of my favorite books ever. Nonetheless, I wanted a name from nature as well, a bill that Marguerite also fits quite suitably, being a kind of flower – a flower that is unfortunately toxic to cats.
