What’s a topic or issue about which you’ve changed your mind?
“Even though we ain’t got money…” I love Kenny Loggins and I’ve always loved this song, but I’m going to interrupt that pretty sentiment right there…
Knowing what I do now, I would have cut in at our wedding reception while that song was being played. And it was my song too. The message was coming from me. My husband sang Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You” to me.
As soon as it started romanticizing poverty, I would’ve yelled, “Shut up! We need money! We need loads of money! Kids are expensive! Rent is expensive! Insurance is expensive! Braces are expensive! And the bills! They never stop coming!”
So, yeah. We’ve never actually been without money, but it was still evident that financial worries would have tried and tested that love to its limit.
Twenty years worth of marital experience later, I know better than to take Danny’s Song to heart. It’s still a beautiful song, but I just know better.
Knowledge can come at great cost, usually in the vessel of a painful lesson. It makes you wonder if wisdom can only be gained at the expense of idealism. Or maybe I’m equating idealism with naïveté. And in that pseudo-philosophical vein, I conclude this musing.
